Everett Community Growers: Job Opportunities

Everett Community Growers (ECG) is hiring Youth Crew (ages 14-20) for our spring, summer, and fall sessions
for youth interested in learning how to grow food in the city and those that are curious about issues like food access,
environmental justice, and community empowerment.

ECG is a community-based nonprofit organization working to build a more just and equitable environment through urban agriculture, youth development, policy advocacy and community engagement. ECG operates two community gardens and two urban farms, and conducts community engagement and advocacy activities centered in racial, economic, environmental and language justice. Our community gardens provide plots for personal food growing for over 40 Everett families, and our urban farms grow organic produce, most of which is distributed to the wider community via a retail operation, and some of which is donated to local families and food pantries.
YOUTH CREW — APPLICATIONS

 

Job Title: Youth Crew
Location: Everett, Massachusetts
Classification: NonexemptPosition Type: Part-time/Seasonal: Spring Session (April through June), Summer Session (June through September), Fall Session (September through November) or all 3 sessions; average of 15 hours/week
Pay Rate: $16/hour (new members); $17/hour (returning members)

Position Summary:
ECG operates two community gardens and two urban farms (one located along the Northern Strand Community Trail and the other at 548 Broadway in front of the old Everett High School). Since 2018 our Youth Crew has supported the growth of our farms, where we grow and sell organic produce and conduct community outreach and engagement activities centered in racial, economic, and environmental justice. 


Essential Functions
Farm Operations:

  • Participate in food production: planting, harvesting, weeding, watering, etc.
  • Track all harvested produce: weigh and document all harvested produce, whether donated or sold
  • Ensure farm site is clean, inviting and visually pleasing


Farm Retail:

  • Actively participate in preparation tasks for weekly farm retail operations
  • Assist customers with produce selection and transactions
  • Set up/break down retail area
  • Stock/restock display crates


Community Outreach and Engagement:

  • Represent ECG positively in the community: attend community events, assist with ECG workshops and events
  • Work to build community involvement with ECG: conduct community outreach, make connections between ECG and other community organizations, etc.
  • Participate in local and regional partnerships, workshops and trainings
    Participate in team projects as they arise


Staff and Organizational Development:

  • Adhere to time, attendance and communications policies
  • Track all hours and activities in a timely manner
  • Actively participate in workshops


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities — Required:

  • Between the ages of 14 to 20
  • Live in Everett OR demonstrate involvement in Everett community
  • Enthusiasm for urban agriculture and food justice
  • A commitment to language justice and racial equity in Everett
  • Willingness to learn and try new things
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as with a team. 


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities — Preferred:

  • Bilingual candidates highly preferred
  • Urban agriculture and community outreach experience preferred, but not required


Environment and Demands:

  • Must have the capability to repeatedly lift and move weight that ranges from 30 to 50 pounds.
  • Ability and desire to continuously perform manual labor in all outdoor weather conditions.


Travel required/not required:

  • Must be able to travel within Everett frequently.
