Everett High School (EHS) Culinary Arts students this week were introduced to the National Guard MRE Challenge, a fun and creative competition that asks students to prepare a meal fit for an active military soldier.
Sergeant First Class Jaime Chambers talked to the students about the origin and evolution of MREs — or Meals Ready to Eat. He discussed nutrition, calories, and preservatives, enlightening students on how to maximize ingredients for an MRE.
For the challenge, teams of two or three students were given an MRE meal and tasked with transforming it into a five star dish. Teams could use one additional ingredient not contained in the MRE, as well as full use of the herb and spice rack in the kitchen. Members of the National Guard and the EHS Student Resource Officers judged the dishes on presentation, taste, and creativity.
The event was a massive success, and the Culinary Arts Department plans on making it a permanent part of the academic calendar.
