Good Morning, Everett High School Families:

We are looking forward to welcoming students back to school on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. This will be a full day of school for all students in Grades 9-12.

The doors open at 7:30 am for breakfast. Students move to homeroom at 7:45 am. Homeroom will be extended on the first day of school to provide students with schedules, emergency forms, MBTA Bus/Train Passes, and review updated procedures. Families, please complete the emergency form and give it to your student to return to school on Thursday, September 3, 2026.

Students in Grade 9 will report to Glendale Park (right in front of EHS) at 7:45 am. Grade 9 students will meet their homeroom teacher and then enter the school building with their class. Students in Grade 9 will receive their Chromebooks in homeroom on the first day of school.

Below are the student expectations, as well as updated procedures on cellphones, tardiness, and class attendance. We will review all updated procedures during the first day of school. The updates will help the school to support students in fully engaging in the learning experience at Everett High School.

There is no school for students on Friday, September 4, 2026; Monday, September 7, 2026; and Tuesday, September 8, 2026. All students return to school on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

Attendance Protocols

A student with (16+) absences in a year is considered chronically absent from school. Absences from school can have a direct impact on learning, and students may struggle to pass their courses. If applicable, the student may receive a (CRA) Child Requiring Assistance Truancy, which is filed in the District Juvenile Court. Everett High School will make every effort to reach out to the parents and students to ensure that the families have been notified of all available resources afforded to the student. Listed you will find a five (5) step protocol to reduce chronic absenteeism and increase daily attendance. *Students and families should refer to the teacher’s course syllabus for specific policies regarding make-up work.

Step 1: Students who are absent from school on the daily attendance roster will receive a daily electronic phone call from Everett High School notifying families that their child is absent from school.

Step 2: After three to five (3 to 5) consecutive days absent from school, the Attendance Outreach team will call families to review the attendance policy and identify the reason for the absences.

Step 3: After more than five (5) consecutive days of being absent from school, the student’s Guidance Counselor will contact the family to schedule a meeting regarding attendance. The Guidance Counselor will identify if the family/student needs any additional assistance or referrals. The student will also be referred to the Student Engagement Team, where tiered interventions will be considered, including an attendance plan or other supportive interventions. If no contact is made with the family, a home visit will be conducted by the Attendance Officer or School Administrator to engage the student back in the school.

Step 4: After eight (8) consecutive absences, the Guidance Office will send a letter home informing the family of the legal responsibilities regarding their student attending school. This letter will also include a list of Community Resource Agencies that will assist the family in supporting the child, and will share the details of a referral to the Family Resource Center for CRA prevention if the student is under the age of 16. Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 76, and Everett Public Schools Attendance Policy require regular daily attendance. The Guidance Counselor will reach out to the family and the student to schedule an appointment.

Step 5: After ten (10) consecutive absences, the Assistant Principal will send a letter home informing the family that the student has ten absences and may be dropped, if the student is over the age of 16. The Assistant Principal may file a (CRA) Child Requiring Assistance with the District Juvenile Court for Truancy if the student is under the age of 16. The CRA process, for students under the age of 16, can begin when a student has 8 cumulative absences in an academic quarter. A student will be discussed, and an attendance plan will be created before a CRA filing.

*Note: EHS will send emails/letters to families of students who have three or more unexcused non-consecutive absences in a two-week period. EHS will also monitor unexcused non-consecutive absences and call families when applicable.

Attendance Procedure

Purpose: Attendance in class is directly connected to student academic outcomes and post-secondary success. This procedure is designed to improve class attendance by establishing clear outcomes for unexcused absences.

Application: The procedure applies to class attendance (a student’s presence in each class period), not daily school attendance (being present at school). Excused absences do not count toward this procedure. The count of unexcused absences resets each academic quarter.

For students with multi-block classes (one class meets for multiple periods during the day), one unexcused absence will count as one unexcused absence for the duration of the multi-block class that day (i.e., CTE classes for students in Grades 10-12).

Buy-Back/Attendance Recovery

Students can Buy-Back up to 3 Unexcused Absences by attending a teacher's after-school academic support sessions.
Attendance at 2 after-school academic support sessions would Buy-Back 1 unexcused absence for that particular class.
For classes that meet each day (i.e., ESL classes), students may Buy-Back up to 6 unexcused absences.

Communication

Students should consistently monitor their attendance through the ASPEN system and report any attendance discrepancies to their grade-level Assistant Principal.
Families may also communicate with their student’s grade-level Assistant Principal if they identify any attendance discrepancies.
When the procedure is implemented due to the number of unexcused absences, a note will be made in the quarterly report card.

Tardy Procedure

PURPOSE
Everett High School is committed to promoting responsibility, accountability, and respect for instructional time. This tardy policy is put in place to support student success regarding time management at school. Arriving on time supports learning, reduces disruptions, and helps students develop sound habits for future success.

MORNING ROUTINE AND HOMEROOM PROCEDURE

Students may enter our building beginning at 7:30 AM and use the cafeteria for breakfast.
At 7:45 a.m., students may proceed to their homeroom, access lockers, and prepare for the school day.
The homeroom period begins promptly at 8:00 AM. Students must be physically present in their homeroom by 8:00 AM.
Students arriving after the homeroom bell rings are considered tardy.
Students entering the homeroom between 8:01 AM and 8:07 AM are marked tardy by the homeroom teacher.
Homeroom teachers should submit attendance at 8:07 AM.
Students arriving at school after 8:00 AM must check in with Security, at front or back entrances, to obtain a tardy slip before reporting to class.

TARDY TO SCHOOL GRACE PERIOD

Each student is permitted five (5) tardies per quarter to account for unforeseen circumstances without consequence.
The tardy to school grace period resets on the first day of each quarter.
Students are responsible for checking email daily and tracking tardies by viewing individual Aspen accounts.

STUDENT ACCOUNTABILITY POLICY

Beginning with the sixth (6th) tardy of each quarter, any student who accumulates two (2) or more unexcused tardies during a school week will be assigned one (1) Tardy Detention.

TARDY DETENTION

Tardy Detentions are held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:45 PM – 3:15 PM in the Library.
Students must arrive on time by 2:45 PM and stay until 3:15 PM to receive credit.
Students can take advantage of the Academic Support option during their detention.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Students are encouraged to attend after-school academic support sessions with their teachers as a good use of time during their Tardy Detention.Students choosing the Academic Support option must:

Students can attend a teacher help session from 2:45 PM – 3:15 PM.
Obtain written verification from the teacher confirming attendance.
Submit the signed verification to their Assistant Principal before leaving for the day.
Approved academic support attendance will satisfy the detention requirement.

FAILURE TO SERVE DETENTION

Students who fail to attend their detention will be assigned one period of In-School Suspension.
Repeated failure to serve assigned detentions may result in progressive disciplinary consequences.

TARDY DETENTION POLICY LOGISTICS

As each quarter progresses, a list is generated identifying all students who have accumulated at least 5 tardies in each quarter.
Each Monday, a Main Office administrative assistant will generate a report identifying students who accumulated two (2) or more tardies during the previous week.
Identified students will be assigned a Tardy Detention and will be notified via email through Aspen. Caregivers will be included in the notification email.
Tardy Detentions are held in the Library from 2:45 PM – 3:15 PM.
Tardy Detentions will be staffed by APs and Building Subs on a rotating schedule on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Detention completion will be recorded directly in Aspen by APs running detention.

Cell Phone Procedures

BELL-TO-BELL PHONE-FREE CLASSROOMS

From the start bell to the end bell of each class, students are not permitted to use personal electronic devices.
This includes:

Cell phones
Earbuds/headphones
Smartwatches

Students are expected to place their cell phones in the assigned classroom phone cubby immediately upon entering class. If a parent or guardian needs to contact a student during the school day, they should contact the Main Office.

EXCEPTIONS
Personal electronic devices may only be used for:

Approved medical needs
Other documented accommodations (504 Plan, IEP)

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

At the beginning of every class, students are expected to:

Place their cell phone in the assigned classroom phone cubby.
Put away all earbuds, headphones, and other personal electronic devices.
Keep smartwatches in their backpack unless required as part of an approved accommodation.
Devices remain stored until the teacher dismisses the class.

VIOLATION RESPONSE
Step 1 – Teacher Redirect

If a student has a cellphone during class, the teacher provides one calm directive to put the cellphone in the cubby.\

Step 2 – Non-Compliance

If a student complies after several calm directives from the teacher, the teacher will complete an ASPEN Conduct Referral. An Assistant Principal will follow up with the student to establish a plan for the cellphone.

Step 3 – Immediate Classroom Disruption

If a student disregards the teacher’s calm directives, the teacher will:

Text or email for administrator support.
The administrator will obtain and hold the phone for the remainder of the day.
- Non-compliance with the school administrator may lead to one or more periods of In-School Suspension (ISS).

Repeated Incidents
If a pattern of behavior continues, Assistant Principals will implement progressive consequences. Progressive consequences may include, but are not limited to:

Parent/guardian meetings
In-School Suspension (ISS)
Phone held in the Main Office during school hours
Other appropriate disciplinary consequences consistent with the Student Handbook

*Accommodations will be made for students per their health plan, 504 Plan, or IEP

Chromebook Use and Responsibility Policy

Bathroom Procedure

At Everett High School, the bathrooms are locked during the first and last 7 minutes of each class. Outside of these times, they remain unlocked and accessible.

If a student needs to use the bathroom during those locked periods, the student can either ask their classroom teacher to contact a school administrator to unlock it, or ask for assistance from a staff member near the bathroom to unlock it.

While this is a new procedure for Everett High School, it is a common practice in many high schools. The bathrooms on the first floor are open throughout the day.
